The finalists from Belmont Primary: L to R: Louie Curham, Dominic Johnson, Evie Hancock and Nikora O’Hare.

Belmont Primary School had 4 children chosen as finalists in the 6th annual Lest We Forget Poetry Competition run by the Auckland Museum during ANZAC Day commemorations. The competition was open to school children across NZ - and this year focussed on love letters. The 10 finalists were invited to read their poems on Anzac Day in the Hall of Memories.

Jo Brookbanks, Event Developer for the Auckland Museum said they had had entries as far away as Dunedin - in Florida! "We have chosen 10 finalists and in this competition we don’t have outright winners; all our finalists are winners".

Love letters are deeply personal and intimate expressions of our emotions, and during wartime men and women alike poured their heart out on paper. In today’s world of email, texts and phones: love letters are declining in numbers. How will the next generation be able to read how much we care for each other, and how much we mean to each other?
This year, the 6th annual Lest We Forget Poetry Competition run by the Auckland Museum and open to school children across NZ - focussed on love letters: letters that sustained both men in the front line and women on the home front. What would you need to say to a loved one who was far away and in peril? And what words would the mother and children at home need to hear to calm their anxious hearts?
