The Pohutukawa is a big tree. It lives on the coast line. It needs water and earth and lots of sunshine. The flowers have seeds and the seeds fall off and the birds pick them up.  When the leaves are red it means good sea food.  It has hairy leaves and it is a very hard tree.

The giant Weta is about 90mm long and is a bug. The giant Weta is brown and huge. The giant weta is brown and huge. The giant weta is nine million years old and is the biggest of all the Weta breeds.
The female lays her eggs out of a system called the ovipositer and its like a hydroslide for the egg!
Wetas are invertebrates. Wetas do not live all over the world. Wetas were alive in the time of the dinosaurs. Wetas have six legs—not eight. Wetas have their ears on their legs.

Who knew that there was a cave weta. And a giant weta has a lot of legs. It is an invertibrate because it has no backbone. They have 6 legs. They are an insect. There is a funny name for the weta. Weta Ponga. It means God of Ugly things. They are sometimes found in the bushes and in the forest. There was a weta in the forest and there was a weta in my shoe. I felt something in my shoe. It started to climb up onto my sock. I took off my sock and stared at it. I was scared when I felt it in my shoe but it was scary so I took off my sock and put it in the water. When I took it out of the wash house the next morning I put them on the ground before I put them on. I looked in them in case there was a weta inside and there wasn’t. By Tijay

The Pohutukawa is a  native New Zealand tree. The Pohutukawa looks like your everyday tree but it is native and it’s not a see everywhere tree.  Pohutukawa has leathery, rugby ball shaped, olive green, hairy leavers. Their flowers have red lines sticking out of them which have tiny, little, yellow pollen on top. The Pohutukawa looks like a plant called the Rata. But the Pohutukawa flowers are thicker than the Ratas. The Pohutukawa is a very big tree. They can live up to hundreds of years old.
A very long time ago Maori used the bark of the Pohutukawa to heal cut’s and sores by boiling it. The biggest Pohutukawas have a hollow trunk.  So they used it to put dead  bodies in and wait until their flesh has come off their bones. They climbed the Pohutukawa to look for land near or far. They could tell if the seafood was nice and fat and will come to shore because the Pohutukawas flowers will be cherry red.
The Pohutukawa roots suck up vitamins and nutrients which helps them grow and makes them very healthy.
The Pohutukawa aren’t extinct yet but we still have to care and look after them.

The Pohutukawa tree is known as the native New Zealand Christmas tree. The Pohutukawa is like lots of normal trees but it has red, spiky balls. Their leaves are the shape of a rugby ball.  The Pohutukawa trees live on the coastline of New Zealand.
The Pohutukawa used to be a resting place for dead bodies.  People used to use it to see if there is good seafood in the water.

Kakapo is a protected New Zealand Native Bird. Kakapo has yellowy, green soft feathers so he can hide from predators. It has a curved beak and long spiky feet.  It is as big as  a kiwi only more round. Kakapos live in New Zealand.
There is a reserve on Whenua Hou Island for them with no stoats, wild cats or dogs.
Kakapos live alone until the male makes a boom that attracts a female. The male makes the nest and the female lays the 2-4 eggs and looks after them for 4 months then feeds them for another 3 months. Then they go and live on their own.  They are nocturnal so they sleep in the day.  Kakapo only live in the South Island Bush area so bush fire is a killing hazard for them.

The Kiwi is a native bird to New Zealand. It is endangered. Kiwis have very brown feathers. They are soft. They also have a long beak with the nostrils at the top. They are cute.
The Kiwi lives in a swampy place where bushes are and big trees are their playground in the forest. Most of the Kiwis live on Stewart Island. And some get moved to safe places.
Kiwis sniffle in the ground to look for food. They waddle all around and there are not many left. Kiwi eat grubs, worms, wetas and bugs.
You need to help save Kiwis by... Making special homes for them to survive and feed them,  also take them somewhere safe and bushy.

The Kakapo is a New Zealand Bird. Kakapo are quite rare and native to New Zealand. That is because there are only 124 left in the world. The Kakapo  has greeny, yellow feathers and the males have white dots on the edge of their feathers as females have all back.
Kakapo live on Whenua Hou which is full of trees bush and grass. That is because Whenua Hou has absolutely no predators.
The Kakapo climbs up trees, lives alone, sleeps, and lives together only for mating. Then they live alone again. We need to feed the kakapo and keep them safe.
