School Times: Our school day is 9 -3. Children should arrive for school between 8.30 and 8.50, we ask they are not here any earlier than 8.30 please. Please allow time for your child put their bag away and put their book bag in the classroom so they are ready for the day. If you have pre-schoolers in the classroom (which we welcome) please ensure they are supervised, as teachers have often set up the classroom for a lesson and it can be frustrating if this is messed up.
If you are late, please see Joyce to let her know that your child is here. If your child is unable to come to school please contact the office – 4456605 or emailoffice@belmont.school.nz or use our Belmont School app - In Google play and App Store search 'Skool Loop' and choose our school once installed - Belmont Primary School.
If your child has to leave during the school day, they need to be collected from the school office where you can sign them out, please. At the end of the day, we have a bell that rings at 3.15, which is our clearing bell.

“Reading at Home” Here are some suggestions to help with your child’s reading.
Make a regular time for reading. Make it a special, enjoyable time. Let your child know that you enjoy this time together. If your child is not in the mood don’t force them to read.
Talk about the book before you read it. Look at the cover, the title, the pictures. Ask, “What do you think it is about?”
Be patient. Give your child time to work out words. 5 seconds or more is reasonable, after 10 seconds encourage your child to use the following strategies:-
“What do you think the word is?
“What letter / sound does the word start with?”
“Have a go.”
“Look at the picture.” Never hide the picture!
“ Read on.”Praise every effort.
Correcting mistakes. If the mistake makes sense, let the child continue the sentence. Then go back and ask, “What word is that?” If the mistake does not make sense, allow time for the child to self-correct. Reread what the child has said and ask “Does that make sense?”
Take turns reading parts of the story. Read together.
Talk about the book after reading it. Ask questions – Did you enjoy the book?, Who were the characters? Which was your favourite character? Be a good role model and be seen as a reader yourself.
